Summary: A lookback on her Journey as an Abandoned Nurse and a Full Grandison Nursing Review

If you don't have experience it's fine. I believe that we already have a good foundation with the degree that we have in nursing but of course if you have experience it will be a advantage for you. I believe na kahit wala ka pang experience pwede ka nang mag-apply kasi you already have the foundations during your undergraduate and you just have to apply it. And we Filipinos are very careful and different when it comes to patient care. If you need guidance, there will always be someone who can train you on how to do things.

In this exclusive interview with Nurse Che, a Filipino Registered Nurse, who recounts her inspiring journey to becoming a USRN in a skilled nursing facility in New Jersey.

She details the comprehensive support provided by the Grandison recruitment agency, including initial accommodation and financial assistance, which she leveraged to secure funds for a car down payment.

Although she faced the significant personal challenge of homesickness after temporarily leaving her two children, Nurse Che expresses high satisfaction with her new environment, noting the advanced equipment and the welcoming, team-centric work culture.

She contrasts the collaborative US atmosphere with the more restrictive environment in the Philippines, highlighting how her US facility promotes professional advancement and offering her a Charge Nurse position shortly after arrival.

Ultimately, she strongly advocates for Grandison, recommending that even nurses with zero bedside experience seize the opportunity to work abroad for personal and financial growth.

Can you tell us about your USA arrival experience with Grandison?

I arrived March last year together with three other nurses and one PT. For me this is my first international flight without my family. Nakakakaba but good thing, Sam was there - Grandison driver who picked us up. Good thing when we arrive there's already an accommodation from Grandison that's waiting for us. Then the next day orientation na with the team. In terms of the weather, I came prepared especially that I lived in Baguio, sanay na sa malamig.

Were you able to make friends with other Grandison employees?

We don't see each other but we stayed in touch and good thing, I met Leo, another Grandison nurse in the facility. He checks up on me and goes to my building para lang kamustahin ako.

What was your biggest challenge that you had during your first month of stay in the USA?

For me the biggest challenge that I have encountered was the adjustment period kasi I came here alone, and I'm a single mom so challenge talaga ang home sickness. So that was my first challenge talaga how to keep my communication in tact with my family in the Philippines.
Second is since this is USA we have to speak their language, good thing na lang we have a strong foundation of IELTS and we were taught how to speak English subject in school so it was a good foundation talaga for all Filipinos. But the challenge here is that I'm in New Jersey, some speak in Spanish so I try to learn a bit of Spanish. But I am just so blessed that the facility kasi very accommodating sila. I never felt na nagsisimula ako, they treat me equally.

How was the experience when it comes to the patient?

Hindi siya mahirap kasi I was given at least 4 weeks orientation na bayad. So may kasama akong nurse, while he's caring for the patient I am able to familiarize on how to handle the residents. Yung two weeks palang madaling ifamiliarize ung sarili but I guess for me it is because it is not a hospital, it's a nursing facility a long term rehab. So it's more about routine. I was so excited to have my own cart and manage my own residents. Here, I handle 28 patients or more but because I have already created a system for myself, for me it's easy and I love what I'm doing. So andun ung gigil everyday to work.

Did you avail of Grandison Car Loan Assistance?

I did not avail of it. What I did was, because I have a Tito here in New Jersey, I availed of the unused accommodation to be converted in cash then that's what I used for downpayment for my car. When I came here I only have a $100 so the assistance of Grandison especially the accommodation was very very helpful to me.

How did you prepare for your first day of work? What was the biggest adjustment working as a nurse in the USA?

The way for me to cope up is to become a good observer because this is a new environment. Then all the knowledge you've learned in the Philippines you can apply it here. It's very different here, because here you can be assertive, you can make a voice and you can be heard. You will really feel like a team. I still have a boss here but it does not feel like I'm working for my boss, it feels more like I am working for myself and I love what I am doing as a nurse.

Do you recommend having nurse experience in the Philippines before going to the United States?

If you don't have it's fine. I beleive that we already have a good foundation with the degree that we have in nursing but of course if you have experience it will be a advantage for you. I believe na kahit wala ka pang experience pwede ka nang mag-apply kasi you already have the foundations during your undergraduate and you just have to apply it. And we Filipinos are very careful and different when it comes to patient care. If you need guidance, there will always be someone who can train you on how to do things.

How is it different working in the USA vs in the Philippines?

Here in the USA, it's more advanced. Hindi tipid yung mga kagamitan dito. When you care for the patients there are equipments. Mas advanced dito. Second, financially wise, it is very rewarding working here, it can give you stability that can support your family. But more than the material rewards, there is growth, and confidence and the strength that you can gain in the USA, it means a lot. It's very different here, since you are heard, you will feel more confident as a nurse.

Advise on how to manage your time working as a nurse in a Skilled Nursing Facility?

Yung pagod is expected na yun pero what I do is and what I can advise is do mind conditioning on how you are going to manage your time. Sa akin I think mas nakakapagod ung traveling time more than the work. I believe that when you enjoy the work, there's passion, you are well compensated and maganda ang team around you, hindi siya nakakapagod. The work is very manageable. Usually working overtime is your choice, if I do double shift that's because I wanted too.

How satisfied are you working as a nurse in the skilled nursing facility?

I haven't tried working in a hospital here, I've only been working here as a nurse in a Skilled Nursing facility and enjoy ko siya. Usually ang mindset ng nurse is that when they graduate, hospital sila. But the Skilled Nursing Facility it can be your foundation, lalo na pag nagsisimula ka because this can be your training ground. You can use working as a nurse in a skilled nursing facility as your foundation here in the USA, adjusting and understanding their healthcare system.

Kamusta ka ngayon and kamusta ang American life?

It's good and I am happy. My kids were able to follow me in the USA and I am able to provide bigger for my family here in the USA and in the Philippines. I can see that living in America, you become wiser and bigger, mas tumibay, which is a big blessing.

Tips to fellow nurses to help with their transition?

A powerful reminder for me is that we always carry the spirit of a Filipino wherever we want to grow or live. Lagi mong babalikan yung purpose on why you want to be a nurse, lagi mong babalikan yung reason kung bakit ka bumabangon. You always bring the courage and compassion. Hindi siya madali pero masarap ung rewarding feeling once you are able to fulfill your purpose.

What do you think about Grandison? What can Grandison improve on?

Grandison was very accommodating. Just a quick background, Grandison was not my first agency pero sila ang sumalo sa akin. And Grandison was there to support me throughout my deployment process. And even now that I am already here in the USA, I can still feel their support. Just recently, the CEO, Avi Lang, they visited us on our facility on my first anniversary, so you will really feel the personal touch that it's not just email email. We were treated not just as deployed nurses, but they really cared like "How are you?" "How are the kids?" "What are your plans?"

Are there any issues that you have experienced with Grandison that you want to raise right now?

There are no issues. For me, before I thought that when you are a Floor Nurse, you will stay with that status for three years, but when I raised it to Avi, he said that "No, if they promote you, just go ahead!" So I felt like, Grandison was there to promote your growth as well. They will not hold you back and will support your growth in the facility.

What's your favorite part working as a Grandison Nurse? Or is there any experience that made a significant impact on your Grandison journey?

Everyday is a big impact for me. I always feel excited going to work, lahat ng CNAs ko kasundo ko and they respect me because I am a Filipino. Working everyday with people that are supportive, and respect you, it makes a big impact on your daily job. So far there's no discrimination and racism.

Would you recommend Grandison to other nurses?

Yes, I highly recommend Grandison. If you are looking for an agency na magsusuporta sa inyo, you can apply with Grandison. They are very accommodating and for a nurse like you, now is the best time to apply. May experience or wala, ang importante ay masimulan mo sya. Kasi wala namang success if hindi mo siya sisimulan. Ang importante magsimula ka para umusad.

How did Grandison helped you in recapturing your petition as you were previously abandoned by a different employer?

In 2019 when I started my application with another agency but then I got abandoned and then I just asked for a release letter. Then I applied to Grandison and then they have me a list of requirements of what they need. Then they are very accommodating and then mabilis siya. They were very helpful and consistent with the follow-ups. Like for example, my license was New York so they also helped me with my licensed endorsement. So technically, I just waited to be deployed while they processed everything so I can come over to the USA.

If you are a Filipino nurse aspiring to work in the United States, you too can be the next successful deployment of Grandison!
