I’m Clen, a USRN in the city of New York. I don’t have hospital experience back in the Philippines but I was so thankful to Grandison, that there’s a staffing agency like Grandison who hires and deploys nurses like me. Well, training is provided naman by the facility so I am really grateful!

How was your arrival experience with Grandison?

So far so good! When we arrived, someone from Grandison picked us up from the airport and brought us to the Grandison office. Actually, Grandison provided one month of free housing accommodation. Upon arrival the driver took us to the staffing house and it was clean and complete for everything that you need like toiletries, just bring your own beddings. Also, the driver also accompanied us to process and open our mobile lines. Then we also had time to tour the city. And about the accommodation, I only expected for a one month accommodation but the facility where I was assigned they provided us accommodation throughout our contract. It’s malaking tipid because I only have to pay $100 to the facility per month and it’s just walking distance. Then the next day, the driver picked us up and drove us so we could do our medical. Then the next day is our orientation in the office, about the PTO, SSN, green card and other things.

Overall, was it a smooth transition for you coming from the Philippines arriving to the United States through Grandison?

For me it’s a really smooth process because when I arrive here, everything has been prepared already and I do not have to look for an apartment anymore.

How did you prepare for your first day of work in the facility?

After our orientation with Grandison, the next day our training with the facility started. We had our lecture training for the things that we need to know so we can know what we need to do.

What is the biggest challenge that you have encountered when you arrive in the United States?

On my end there was really no particular challenge as everything had been provided and the facility had provided training to help me transition. What I can say is that for nurses, of course it will be best to have experience in the Philippines so that they won’t have to experience difficulties when they arrive here.

How is the nurse to patient ratio in a Skilled Nursing Facility?

I can only speak from my experience, like here in my facility, we have 40 residents, but there are LPNs and RNs working all together. And hindi ka naman nila bibiglain to handle that many patients, the most number that I manage is 22.

Was there any experience that you wanted to share with the nurses aspiring to work in the USA?

For me, I think it’s being prepared for handling family complaints from the families of residents. I have prepared myself for the worst but so far so good. Sometimes we can just tell them that we will get back to them, then we can ask our senior nurses for advice.

Because retrogression processing time takes longer, do you think that the USA is still worth it versus other countries?

I used to work as a caregiver in the United Kingdom but for me I can say that stability, career, financial and luxury things, you can get more in the USA. You can buy a house here, it’s really the land of the free. So the USA is still really the best country if you want stability.

Can you describe your USRN journey with Grandison in one word?

I can say that it is “blessed”. I have tried to expect the worst but I am so thankful and grateful because I am one of the lucky nurses who didn’t encounter any issues or challenges so far when I arrived.
